It is hard for me to believe that I wrote a song about a vehicle. But, what’s more American than a song about a truck, amirite? 🙄 This song actually started as a joke! My good friend, Johnny Gates, had suggested that I would do well in country and that I should start writing country music. So I said, ok what does a hit country song need to be about, a truck, a girl, whiskey, beer, maybe all of the above?

Although this song started as a joke, it has become one of my favorite songs on the record. You see, I don’t even drive a truck. I drive a minivan. I travel constantly from gig to gig, often providing my own sound equipment, so a van is the perfect vehicle for me. Singing about a truck seemed a bit phony. But that is the beauty of storytelling, we can bend the truth a little to tell the right story.

This song became less about a truck, and more about my absolute favorite thing to do. I LOVE driving around, windows down, volume up, listening to music. Whether it is a new mix from the studio, a new demo, or one of my favorite artists, I can kill hours doing this. That is what this song is about. 

I realized that even before I was an artist, I have beautiful memories of driving around on summer evenings, listening to music and feeling the wind whip by. I’m sure that everyone can relate to this on some level, so no matter what kind of car you drive, I hope you love “Pickup Truck” as much as I do, and remember, “WHEN YOU HEAR MY SONG, TURN IT UP! IT SOUNDS BETTER IN A PICKUP TRUCK!”
